Osaraba, Kami no Puroresu

by Jordan Breen (jbreen@sherdog.com)

The world of MMA has lost a true pioneer, with the passing of wrestling legend Karl Gotch. Gotch passed away surrounded by friends and family Saturday in Tampa, Fla. August 3 would have been Gotch's 83rd birthday.

Born Karl Isatz, Gotch represented Belgium in both freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling at the 1948 Olympics Games in London. He later made the transition to pro-wrestling after training at The Snakepit, Billy Riley's famous catch wrestling school in Wigan, England. He then adopted the ring name 'Gotch' in honor of legendary catch wrestler Frank Gotch.

Gotch rose to prominence, competing all over North America in the AWA, NWA and WWWF (now the WWE), however it was in Japan where his impact would be felt most. Gotch headlined the first ever New Japan Pro Wrestling event in 1972 against Antonio Inoki, and would go on to become a trainer for New Japan.

More importantly, some of Gotch's students -- Akira Maeda, Yoshiaki Fujiwara, Nobuhiko Takada, Satoru Sayama -- went on to form the Universal Wrestling Federation, the beginning of the "UWF system" which gave rise to the popularity of the shoot style pro-wrestling that would later evolve into MMA.

Sayama would go on to found Shooto in 1986, while Akira Maeda formed the RINGS Fighting Network in 1991. Yoshiaki Fujiwara's star students, Masakatsu Funaki (Pictures) and Minoru Suzuki, founded Pancrase in 1993, while Nobuhiko Takada (Pictures) played a pivotal role in bringing MMA to the forefront in Japan due to his battles with Rickson Gracie and his participation in PRIDE.

Fittingly, the Japanese call Gotch "Kami no Puroresu," meaning "The God of Pro Wrestling."

Gladiator Challenge: Battleground Results

135 lbs. – Sam Stevens-Milo vs. Joey Barang
San Francisco’s mohawked Joey Barang wasted no time in drilling through his opponent, taking Sacramento’s Sam Stevens-Milo down, throwing him into a cradle, and then working a few subs. Barang took the mount, then took his back, and it was only a few seconds later that he would sink it in tight enough for Stevens-Milo to tap his opponent.
–Joey Barang wins by rear-naked choke at 1:15 of the 1st round.

205 lbs. – Luiz Sanchez vs. Mike Fonseca
Luiz Sanchez gave Tracy, Calif. fighter Mike Fonseca a tough time in the first round, aggressively going for the takedown and tossing grenades. Sanchez dominated the first few minutes with malicious ground shots and solid control. Fonseca reversed and the match flip-flopped until Sanchez tired in the last minute. Fonseca stole the round in the last 10 seconds when he nearly finished Sanchez while riding mount. In the second, Sanchez seems to have lost his gas, and taking advantage of this, Fonseca took the rear-naked choke for the win.
–Mike Fonseca wins by rear-naked choke of the 2nd round.

185 lbs. – Kurt Osiander vs. Jeff Morris
Hometown favorite and Ralph Gracie Jiu-Jitsu-San Francisco head-instructor Kurt Osiander mowed down Jeff Morris in Rhino-like fashion, outworking him in the clinch, and finally driving him down to the mat. After a scramble to the feet, Kurt reined him in and took his back. Following solid rear strikes on the ground, Osiander used his black belt in BJJ to sink in the rear-naked choke and finish Morris half-way through the first round. Ralph Gracie joined Osiander in the ring to congratulate his top instructor on his win. According to the crowd, Kurt “the Rhino” Osiander is one of the most popular fighters on the card.
–Kurt Osiander wins by rear-naked choke at 2:40 of the 1st round.

HW – John Devine vs. Chase Gormley
Local fighter John Devine looked like he had early control of Chase Gormley, but lost it toward the end of fight. Despite looking like a Greco-Roman wrestling match at times, the heavyweight fight had its exciting moments. Both fighters moved surprisingly well for men-of-size, but it was Gormley who seemed to be able to weather the storm well-enough to submit San Francisco’s Devine in front of his hometown crowd with a technique that is rarely seen in heavyweight fights. While in Devine’s guard, Gormley fell back for a straight leg lock, switched to a heel hook and submitted Devine by heel-hook to win by tap-out in the 3rd.
–Chase Gormley wins by heel hook at 1:10 of the 3rd round.

145 lbs. – Kyle Rideau vs. Ricardo Moreira
San Francisco’s Ricardo Moreira took out Daly City’s Kyle Rideau in 15 seconds with a knockout that clearly had some power behind. This was no flash knockout; Rideau was out for a good minute or three.
–Ricardo Moreira wins by KO at :15 of the 1st round.

155lbs. – Zack Yngojo vs. Bobby Stack
Zack Yngojo and Bobby Stack put on an exciting fight that had the different camps loudly cheering their teammates on, reverberating Kezar’s 19th century acoustics. Stack largely dominated the first round, but Zack had his moments. Into the second round, Stack took the prevailing role as he dominated Yngojo with strikes from the top position. Yngojo, taking strikes to the back and sides of his head, went to his side. It was at that point when the ref decided that curling up in a ball is not exactly “intelligently defending one’s self”, and he stopped the fight at two minutes into the 2nd round.
–Bobby Stack wins by TKO at 2:17 of the 2nd round.

170 lbs. – Pat Minihan vs. Zak Bucia
American Kickboxing Academy fighter and San Mateo resident Pat Minihan (5-0) took control early, and never let go in his fight against Zak Bucia. Minhan’s dominant wrestling seemed to be a major factor in the win, as his forceful style left Bucia with little room to maneuver. Between dropping bombs and staying top dominant, Minihan kept Bucia’s flexible jiu-jitsu at bay. Even though Bucia had impressive sub attempts from the rubber guard, like when he actually attempted a gogoplata, his submission never materialized. Bucia’s highlight was in the last 30 seconds of the fight when he took advantage of a gassed Minihan and got top control and tried to rain down some elbows. But it was too little, too late, and Minihan won the clear unanimous decision.
–Pat Minihan wins a Unanimous Decision.

185 lbs. – Eric Lawson vs. Chris Werner
Eric Lawson had all of Concord, Calif. in the audience and undefeated Chris Werner was there to challenge him in front of Lawson’s local fan base. First-rate aggression by both men led the fighters to exchange in the pocket when Eric Lawson rapid-fired off three or four uppercuts that knocked Werner out cold. What was most impressive about Lawson’s knockout was that the first upper cut actually knocked Werner out and lifted him up, but Lawson was able to slip in at least two more upper cuts with the same hand before Werner was actually on the ground. Lawson appropriately celebrated by jumping up on the fence to pump his supporters.
–Eric Lawson wins by upper cut KO at :45 of the 1st round.

155 lbs. – Alexander Crispim vs. Lance Wips
Ralph Gracie black belt Alexander Crispim from San Francisco via Brazil took on Reno’s Lance Wips, who trains at Ken Shamrock’s Reno-based Lion’s Den gym. Clearly the hometown favorite, Crispim took control of the fight and kept it until he finished Wips midway through the 1st round. Although squirrelly and strong with decent counter-techniques, Wips was never able to gain a prevailing position over Crispim. After a few early exchanges, Crispim got top control and after a scramble ended up holding Wips in a tight arm-in Guillotine. Wips tapped out at 2:55 and the local crowd went crazy for Crispim’s triumph.
–Alexander Crispim wins by arm-in Guillotine at 2:55 of the 1st round.

185 lbs. – Nik Theotikos vs. Raul Castillo (Main Event)
In the main fight, undefeated Nik Theotikos (4-0) took on fellow undefeated fighter Raul Castillo (2-0). Although some in the audience thought the tough Theotikos would plow through Castillo, largely due to Nik’s recent solid performances in Gladiator Challenge and Strikeforce XC, that prediction fell short of coming true. Theotikos secured a beautiful slam early on, but Castillo reversed it and put Theotikos against the fence. Soon Castillo took his back, then mount, then back, never letting Theotikos breath or get out from under his dominant riding. Castillo flattened his opponent out multiple times, and despite trying to stay in the game, Theotikos wasn’t able to reverse his position or mount any type of offense. Total domination of Theotikos by Raul Castillo and the fight ended by TKO at 3:43 of the 1st. Theotikos, quite frankly, didn’t seem to be ready for what Castillo brought to the table. Raul Castillo convincingly won his third MMA fight.
–Raul Castillo wins by TKO at 3:43 of the 1st round.

Mark Coleman Readying for UFC Return

"I've always wanted to get back in that cage and I always knew I'd get back in there at least one more time. That's were I got started. I like the cage and I like the UFC rules better anyways,” said Coleman, obviously in reference to the brutal forearms and elbows he was so famous for. "I can be more effective in the cage than I was in the ring."

In a recent interview with MMAWeekly’s Scott Petersen, Coleman expounded upon a possible return to the Octagon and his desire to do so.

Saying, “I’m still improving” and “on any given day, victory is within your grasp,” Coleman believes that a fight with current UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture would be a good match-up for him.

It could be argued that Couture has been more relevant to today’s mixed martial arts’ scene, but looking at the fight on paper they are roughly the same age, currently have identical 15-8 professional records, started their MMA careers in the UFC within a year of each other, and come from strong wrestling backgrounds. With the strong name recognition of each, it might be a fight that a segment of fans would want to see, although Coleman would likely have to take another fight in the UFC first. And that is all banking on the fact that Zuffa is willing bring him back to the Octagon.

Interestingly, Coleman is also the subject of a new movie that is readying for production. Entitled “The Smashing Machine,” the same as the movie about his friend Mark Kerr, it sounds as if Jean-Claude Van Damme could be portraying the former UFC and Pride champion… an “interesting” choice that Coleman even seems to find odd.

Two Title Bouts to Headline TKO 30

(MONTREAL, CANADA) – TKO Major League MMA is excited to announce two terrific bouts for TKO 30: Apocalypse which is set to take place at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada on September 28th, 2007. In the main event, Sam “Hands of Stone” Stout returns to defend his Lightweight Championship against the dangerous, Martin "The Hammer" Grandmont. This is a match-up between two of MMA’s best kick-boxers and is guaranteed to have plenty of fireworks! The co-main event will feature Chris “The Menace” Clements against Sean “The Pimp” Pierson for the vacant Welterweight Title! This is a classic match-up of striker versus grappler between two of the country’s top welterweights.

SAM STOUT was last seen in the main event of the most recent Ultimate Fight Night. It was a very exciting, back and forth war with top UFC Lightweight, Spenser Fisher who Stout had previous beaten in his UFC debut. Fisher evened the score with a decision victory, but Stout’s UFC career remains a very bright one. Always wanting to stay active and never backing down from a challenge, Stout will now honor Canadian fans with his fourth title defense! Grandmont and Stout actually fought each other in a very close and action packed amateur kickboxing bout many years ago. It will be interesting to see them carry their feud to MMA as both have similar skill sets. They not only possess superior kick-boxing skills, but they also have excellent cardio and very good takedown defenses. This should be a very competitive and highly entertaining battle for TKO fans! MARTIN GRANDMONT is an amateur kick-boxing champion and has looked unstoppable since dropping to Lightweight. He annihilated a very highly regarded, Tyler Jackson at TKO 29 and managed to stop Dave Pariseau with strikes at TKO 28. TKO fans have seen his skills and confidence grow leaps and bounds since making his debut two years ago. Coincidently, Grandmont carries the burden of two losses to Team Tompkins’ fighters which likely adds fuel to his fire as he now looks to become the TKO Lightweight Champion!

CHRIS CLEMENTS has been unstoppable since making his TKO debut. He is on a four fight win streak, with all of his wins coming via knockout, including the fastest knockout in MMA history in only 6 seconds! Clements is another Team Tompkins superstar with excellent striking, devastating ground and pound and incredible strength. His opponent, SEAN PIERSON, is a very accomplished wrestler from Shah Franco Martial Arts in Toronto, Ontario. In the original days of TKO, President Stephane Patry predicted that Pierson and Georges St-Pierre were going to be the next big international superstars of MMA. St-Pierre’s accomplishments are well known, but Pierson instead chose to pursue a normal life outside of the sport. He got married and landed a high paying job in the technology industry. But, Pierson always felt as if he left something behind and after watching the successes of his TKO companions he’s now chosen to return to pursue his dream. He looked as if he hadn’t lost a step in his comeback fight quickly disposing of Chester Post and he now looks to realize his dream of becoming a TKO Champion! Don’t be surprised if this fight gets surrounded by a lot of drama between now and September 28th. Both fighters are supremely confident of their abilities and have been outspoken on their opponents in the past. This is a pivotal moment in both of their careers as the winner becomes Welterweight Champion and will surely have many opportunities which have not been previously afforded to them. In the end, TKO fans are going to be treated to a compelling and electrifying clash between two powerhouses!

TKO30 will also feature the return of Mark “The Machine” Hominick! Also on the card are local superstars: Stephane Dube, Steve Bosse, and the long awaited return of Stephane Vigneault! As always, stay tuned to www.TKOMMA.tv for the latest updates on TKO 30: APOCALYPSE – September 28th, 2007 at the Montreal Bell Centre. To PURCHASE TICKETS: order on-line at the Admission Network: www.ADMISSION.com; by phone at 1-800-361-4595; or in person at the Bell Centre ticket office.

Ultimate Cage Wars Announces September Card

As if his duties to the IFL don't keep him busy enough, Krzysztof Soszynski is already knee deep in preparation for his next Ultimate Cage Wars event that he co-promotes in Winnipeg.

"September to Remember" will feature:

Lindsey Hawkes vs. Kevin Manderson (Pictures)
Jesse Bongfeldt vs. Daniel Grandmaison (Pictures)
Steve Taylor vs. Justin Doyon
Jordan Mein vs. Garret Vernoy
Aaron Basso vs. Dave De Lorenzi
Ryan Brigham vs. Andre Burkovsky
Markhalie Wedderburn vs. Jamie MacDonald

Ultimate Cage Wars promoter Soszynski announced this week several fights that will take place at the organization's "September to Remember" card. The event will of course take place in September, on the 7th, at the Winnipeg Convention Center, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Jesse Bongfeldt (10-4) will look to continue impressing, as he is scheduled to fight Daniel Grandmaison (3-3). Last weekend, Bongfeldt stopped Sean Pierson in the second round for the TKO victory at Hardcore Championship Fighting's event in Edmonton. The Lethbridge fighter is now 4-1 in his last five fights, holding wins over Pierson, Sean Huffman, Jason St. Louis and Elmer Waterhen. Bongfeldt's only loss since 2005 is to UFC vet Jonathan Goulet, who defeated him earlier this year in March.

Grandmaison is coming off a win over Francis Flibotte at Ultimate Generation Combat 17 in March. However, many would likely consider it to be quite an upset if he were to get past Bongfeldt. The Canadian Martial Arts Center veteran has had over 20 fights now competing both professionally and in amateur.

One of Winnipeg's more traveled fighters, Kevin Manderson (11-9-1), will take on another of the city's fighters in Lindsey Hawkes (1-1). Manderson is 2-3 in his last five fights; most recently he was submitted by TJ Grant at King of the Cage Canada's "Supremacy" card on July 14. Hawkes was victorious in his last fight, a split decision win over Rory McDonnell at UCW 8 in June.

WEC Announces August 5 Fights

Press Release (Courtesy of WEC)

Las Vegas, Nev. (USA) – With two World Extreme Cagefighting® titles on the line, the August 5th WEC™ card at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas is already packed with world-class mixed martial arts excitement. Add four more evenly matched battles pitting a mix of established contenders and rising stars against each other, and you have a night to remember for all fight fans.

Today, the organization announced that WEC: Condit vs. Larson, headlined by the WEC Welterweight title bout between reigning Champion Carlos Condit and the No. 1 Contender Brock Larson, and the vacant WEC Middleweight battle Paulo Filho vs. Joe Doerksen, will now also feature featherweights Jeff Curran vs. Stephen Ledbetter, and lightweights Jamie Varner vs. Sherron Legget in the televised main card lineup.

Preliminary bouts will include welterweight Hiromitsu Miura vs. Fernando Gonzalez, and bantamweights Antonio Banuelos vs. Justin Robbins.

WEC: Condit vs. Larson will be televised live nationally on VERSUS beginning at 9:00pm ET/6:00pm PT. All live WEC events will be presented in Hi-Definition (HD) where available. For more information and how to find VERSUS in your local viewing area, visit http://www.versus.com/findversus.

Tickets also are available online through www.wec.tv or www.ticketmaster.com.

One of the premier 145-pound fighters on the planet, Jeff “Big Frog” Curran (30-8-1) finally returns to the WEC after an almost five year absence. A veteran of the UFC and PRIDE organizations, Curran has been fighting professionally since 1998. This 29-year old Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belt has traded with premier names in mixed martial arts, including Norifumi “Kid” Yamamoto, current UFC Champion Matt Serra, and Hatsu Hioki. He has his sights set on taking the WEC Featherweight title from Champion Urijah Faber, and knows that a win over Stephan Ledbetter will move him one step closer to earning that coveted championship fight.

“I know that coming out of Hardcore, the gym where he trains, that he definitely will be in top shape and well rounded,” said Curran of Ledbetter. “So far, although he hasn’t had a whole lot of cage experience, he is undefeated, so won’t look past him – not for one minute. I feel comfortable taking him on in all areas, but respect him enough to be cautious.”

A member of the respected Hardcore Gym in Athens, Georgia, unbeaten 25-year old Stephen Ledbetter (6-0) is a versatile fighter who knows that a win over an established contender like Curran will catapult him into the world featherweight rankings. With all but two of his wins coming via submission, he obviously has the skills to get the job done. (nice)

“Fighting in the WEC means a lot to me,” said Ledbetter. “It means my efforts during the past few years are finally paying off. This is my opportunity to show the world who I am.”

Rising star Jamie Varner (12-2,1 NC) comes to the WEC after a two-fight stint in the UFC, where he impressed fight fans with his win over Jason Gilliam and his hard fought loss to Hermes Franca. Now the Phoenix native brings his confidence and aggression to the World Extreme Cagefighting organization, and he said that he’s not going to stop “sleeping people” until he gets his hands on a lightweight title belt.

Chicago-born Sherron “Rob Roy” Leggett (16-1, 1 NC) impressed the mixed martial arts world with his stoppage of Charlie Kohler in May, the Chicago native established himself as a fighter to watch and is a true fan favorite. Now training with UFC veteran Dave Strasser, Leggett is an up and comer with a bright future ahead of him in the fight world.

Known as “The Last Samurai”, Tokyo’s Hiromitsu Miura (7-4) is a world-respected fighter who, at 25, is just starting to reach his potential as a mixed martial artist. A Pancrase and K-1 veteran whose judo and standup skills make him a tough fight for anyone in the sport, Miura gave world-ranked Jason “Mayhem” Miller all he could handle at WEC 27 before losing a hard fought three round decision.

Hard-nosed battler Fernando Gonzalez (12-4) has only one speed in the cage, and that’s all out. A boxer and jiu-jitsu fighter out of Temecula, California, the 5 foot 8 “Menifee Maniac” is 2-1 in the WEC, with wins over Alex Stiebling and Jimmy Dexter. He will be looking to notch his third win at the expense of Miura on August 5.

27-year old Antonio Banuelos (14-4) is a true veteran of World Extreme Cagefighting, having competed in the show eight times over the course of his six-year pro MMA career, compiling a 6-2 WEC record in the process. A protégé of the legendary Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell, this native of Tulare, California has his sights set on the top of the WEC’s 135-pound weight class.

Springfield, Illinois’ Justin Robbins (11-2-1) counts wrestling as his base fighting discipline, but the other aspects of his game are nothing to be laughed at, as he has scored four wins by submission and one by TKO as he fought his way up the ranks to earn a spot in the WEC. But if he wants to stay here, he has to get by the veteran Banuelos.

“He’s a tough scrappy kid, explosive and quick, with good wrestling,” said Robbins of his opponent. “I think it has the potential for being fight of the night.”

The remaining bouts for WEC: Condit vs. Larson will be announced in the near future. All bouts subject to change. For more information about WEC: Condit vs. Larson and current WEC fight news, visit www.wec.tv.
